Akathist Service, Saint Alexis Toth: Confessor and Defender of Orthodoxy in America (CD)

Akathist to the Divine Passion of Christ (2 CDs) (Служба с Акафистом Божественным Страстям Христовым)
This recording of the Lenten Vespers with the Akathist to the Passions of Christ is a unique example of this service in our catalog. Originally modeled after the remembrance of the “Stations of the Cross” in the Western Church, the “Passion” Service, introduced into Orthodox use in the seventeenth century by Metropolitan Peter Mogila (+1647), has now become a traditional aspect of Lenten celebrations in many parts of the Orthodox world. Served on four occasions in the course of Great Lent it prepares the faithful for the Holy Week remembrances of Christ’s suffering and crucifixion by using some of the same hymns and Gospel readings that will be heard later on Holy Friday and Saturday. The fine Male Choir of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery Representation Church (Metochion) is heard here in a live recording, which draws upon the finest liturgical chant arrangements employed in the musical practices of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery–works by Kastalsky, Archimandrite Matthew (Mormyl), and Deacon Sergius Trubachov. The booklet contains titles and an introductory article in Russian and English; no text translations are given.–V.M.
America’s Holy Mountain
In an 88-minute documentary issued in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the founding of St. Tikhon’s Monastery , “America’s Holy Mountain,” filmmaker Grisha Ressetar traces the holy habitation’s history. Through the use of rare photo and movies, some from private collections and never seen before publicly, the story of the monastery is told in the context of Orthodoxy in North America. Included are the arrival of the first monks to Alaska, Patriarch Tikhon and Archbishop Arseny, the Russian Orthodox sobor of 1917-1918, the many bishops who lived there, the seminary and more. The film also interviews several with first-hand knowledge of the monastery’s history, such as Metropolitan Herman, Fr. John Nehrebecki, Fr. John Perich, Fr. Daniel Ressetar and Julia Jacewicz. Narrating is Fr. Daniel Kovalak. Recent footage features St. Tikhon’s through the seasons, from the colorful foliage of fall to the white snow of winter. Scenes from the annual Memorial Day pilgrimage are included as is the all-but-forgotten “second” monastery church, which was destroyed by an arsonist. The educational documentary makes a suitable gift or addition to a parish or personal library.
And on Earth Peace (І На Землі Мир)
This is a lovely new offering from the Heruvymy Quartet of Edmonton, Canada. The imaginative and well-considered choice of repertoire contains just the right mix between “East” and “West”–between popular Ukrainian carols and some of the best selections from the Western carol repertoire. The four wonderfully blended women’s voices sing with their customary musicality and refinement, a great gift to both your Slavic and non-Slavic friends!

Angelic Light: Music from Eastern Cathedrals
Cappella Romana is one of the Pacific Northwest’s few professional chamber vocal ensembles. It has a special commitment to mastering the Slavic and Byzantine repertories in their original languages, thereby making accessible to the general public two great musical traditions that are little known in the West.
The selections of “Angelic Light: Music from Eastern Cathedrals” feature both liturgical and para-liturgical works, seamlessly moving from ancient chant melodies to compositions by some of the world’s most notable composers working in the tradition today including Rev. Dr. Ivan Moody, Peter Michaelides and Tikey Zes.
Song selection and sequence from Ellen Holmes (producer of the Hearts of Space Records’ Sacred Treasures series)

Apocalypse: The Book of Revelation within Orthodox Christian Tradition
Retreat lectures on compact disk
4-CD Set
These lectures offer a fresh approach to reading the Book of Revelation and understanding its complex messages. While Fr Hopko notes that “everything about the Apocalypse is controversial–not only in modern scholarship but also in church history,” he grounds the place of this cryptic writing within the context of ongoing life in the Orthodox Church. In particular, he draws attention to the symbols and words originating in the Hebrew scriptures and demonstrates that the Book of Revelation not only has inspired the Liturgy of the Church but also has been inspired by it. Fr Hopko transforms the typical, modern exegesis of this biblical text from one of literal fundamentalism and futuristic prophecy to one of experiencing eternal life, here and now, in the worship of the Church.
