The World Premiere performance of Benedict Sheehan’s Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (2018) will showcase a major new work of Orthodox choral music by an American composer. Commissioned in 2015 by the PaTRAM Institute, Sheehan’s Liturgy is among the first complete settings of the Orthodox Liturgy ever to be composed for the English language. The sumptuous a cappella score draws on the rich tradition of Russian Orthodox choral music, but contains echoes of the diverse array of musical traditions the make up the American Church today.
